Heartbeats

Kuro was never the one for holding hands.

He was mostly okay with casual touching; he’d learned to bear Akira’s laid-back embraces and friendly pats on the shoulder by Grandpa, but it was all different when it came to Mio. She herself felt the buzzing electricity every time their bodies occasionally brushed against each other in the hallways - of course- but sadly, it was never enough. The problem was that the boy seemed to shy away every time Mio moved in to reach out and poke Kuro’s arm to get his attention – even though ‘shy’ wasn’t quite the word. Kuro always seemed very aggressive when it came to touching.

Of course, Mio had known him long enough to have learned that it was a part of him that couldn’t be changed, but still – it didn’t stop her from feeling hurt about it, especially when she observed the intimate but subtle touches Nanami and Jericho shared anytime they met in the middle of the schoolday. Sure, Kuro sometimes grabbed Mio’s arm for a brief second when he got impatient at the girl’s slower pace of living; these stolen skin-on-skin –contacts always lightened Mio up even though the electric shock was over before it even started. And lately Kuro had taken the habit of grabbing her wrist when he wanted to lead her somewhere, or sometimes even to comfort her when Fude came up to them and called her names. That always seemed to make up for every rude thing Kuro had said to her , and she couldn’t hold the shy smile from creeping on her face now and then for the rest of the day – remembering the warmth of Kuro’s palm on her hand and their casual chattering like nothing had happened.

They were walking on the Northern Beach on the second last day of Mio’s stay. There was serene, gnawing melancholy in the air; both of them were quiet and Mio concentrated in sensing Kuro with her every cell, smelling his hairspray along with the saltiness of the sea air and feeling the heat that radiated from his body. That boy would press permanent prints on Mio’s memories for sure, without asking for permission from either one of them. Sometimes Mio wondered if the feeling that was sometimes showing in Kuro’s dark eyes was something mirroring the way Mio felt for him, but the moment was always over so quickly that she couldn’t be sure.

Now when they were pacing over the slimy rocks of the abandoned beach, he would reach out for her arm to help her keep balanced every time she slipped.

“Stay upright, you idiot,” he’d say every time, “you don’t want to have a black eye on your graduation tomorrow, or do you? You’d fucking embarrass me.”

Mio would nod and watch her steps as well as she could. And occasionally their shirt-clad arms would brush together when neither of them was paying attention.

“You know Kuro, I’ve really learned to love this island during this year,” Mio whispered when they started climbing a ragged sandy hill in the eastern corner of the beach.

“That’s stupid,” Kuro murmured with a cigarette between his chapped lips, “what’s there to love?”

Mio smiled sadly. “It’s so beautiful in here… And it has to do with the people, too… Grandpa and Nana-chan and Akira and- ” She stopped and hid her slightly flushed face from Kuro by faking sudden interest at the coulds of mist over the darkened sea. .

“You sentimental idiot.” Kuro blew smoke from his lungs and threw the remnants of his cigarette into an old tin can half full with its twins, looking into the empty sky above. He must come here often, Mio wondered. “You’ll be fucking out of here by this time tomorrow.”

Then – Mio’s heart skipped a beat – he took her hand, intertwining their fingers with an unbearable ease but still watching the horizon closely. “You’re a fucking idiot, Mio.”

And Mio couldn’t fight the truly idiotic smile spreading on her face.
